My Approach

A good writer is a good storyteller, and a good editor is a good listener. As a tutor, I listen to students’ stories and help them express themselves with clarity and honesty. I do not write my students’ essays for them — rather, I help students write the best essay possible. I am empathetic to the stress and intensity of applying to college or meeting other important deadlines, and I do my best to reassure students who feel anxious during this process.

No two writers are the same, just as no two people are the same. For this reason, I am dedicated to creating individualized methods to help students succeed. Some students need instruction on the fundamentals of writing, while more advanced students may simply require help refining their work. Even the most skilled writers need a “second pair of eyes” to review their work and catch errors they may have missed. For all my clients, I have three main goals:

1. To help students express themselves with style and intention

2. To help students feel proud of what they’ve written

3. To provide students with communication skills they’ll draw on for the rest of their lives 

Writing is important for many different professions, and it’s important for life. When we learn to read and write, we also learn how to think and live. If we allow it to be, writing can be an intensely personal activity — through the writing process, students have the chance to explore their memories and draw out what is meaningful, hilarious, depressing, or some combination of the three. Personal writings such as the college essay present a particular opportunity for students to get to know themselves on a deeper level, or explore a side of themselves they might not inhabit in everyday life. Plus, writing can be fun! Some students will come away from tutoring sessions with a passion for writing they never knew they possessed.
